The Curator House is an inspiring new phase of the Lapalala Wilderness School, located within the Lapalala Reserve. The design is rooted in its context, featuring a thoughtful and sustainable material palette that blends traditional masonry with rammed earth, local rock, and timber. A key feature is the materiality sourced from on-site excavations; iron-rich soil is used for the rammed-earth walls, while a subtle aggregate enhances the concrete floors. The interior layout is designed as an interactive and guiding experience, defined by exposed plywood ceilings and a striking green mosaiced 'river' flowing across the floor, which visually navigates guests through the space's diverse functions. These intentionally zoned areas include a quiet library corner, a coffee bar, a multi-functional presentation space, an engaging exhibition display, a tranquil pause and reflect space, a greenhouse, and a beautiful outdoor seating area. The space is a manifestation of the school's core belief: strengthening the interconnectedness of man and the environment, educating a diverse audience about ecology, history, and conservation, all while drawing inspiration from the powerful, life-giving flow of the Palala River.
